　　这组动词都可表示“停止”、“终止”的意思。

　　stop 普通用词，其使用范围广泛，可指停止任何行动或活动。但需注意stop to do sth.

　　和stop doing sth. 的区别。stop to do sth. 指停下来（为了）去做另一件事，而stop doing sth. 指停止手中正在做的事。

　　1）She stopped to read the notice.

　　（她停下来看通告。）

　　She stopped reading the notice.

　　（她停止看通告。）

　　2) He came to the new building and stopped suddenly.

　　（他来到新大楼前突然停了下来。）

　　cease 正式用词，指停止某行动或活动，往往含某事不再存在或完全停止或终止。表示停止正在做的事可说cease to do sth. 或cease doing sth. , 两者没有区别。

　　1) The general ordered the troop to cease fire.

　　（将军命令部队停火。）

　　2) Death occurs when vital organs, such as heart or lungs, cease to function.

　　（当重要器官如心脏和肺部停止功能死亡就发生。）

　　3) When I want over to them, they ceased talking / to talk and pretended to do something else.

　　（当我向他们走去,他们便停止谈话,假装在做其它的事情。）

　　halt 常指使正在运动中的人或物停下来。

　　1) The officer halted his troops for a rest.

　　（军官下令部队停止前进休息一下。）

　　（通过保护臭氧层和防止温室效应来保护大气层是环境所需要的。）

　　pause 指中途停止，然而还会继续进行。

　　1) She paused a moment before going on with the story.

　　（她停了一会儿，接着继续讲这个故事。）

　　2）You have three chances to pause the game

　　（你有三次暂停游戏的机会。）

　　quit 指果断地停止做某事，有时也可指因某种原因而停止做某事。

　　1) He decided to quit smoking for the sake of health.

　　（为了健康起见，他决定戒烟。）

　　2) Owing to the falling health, Mr. Smith had to quit his job.

　　（由于健康状况下降,史密斯先生不得不辞职。）

　　terminate 正式用词，相当于end的用法。cut short 指“中止”、“中断”正在进行的活动。pull up 指车辆的停止。

　　1) The incessant rain during the vacation got them down so badly that they decided to terminate their holiday ahead of schedule.

　　(假期里雨下个不停使他们很失望,他们决定提前终止假日。)

　　2) If you can not do the payment we will terminate the contract and claim for compensation.
